Should Free Speech be Regulated on Social Media
Imagine writing a comment or posting a video on one of your social media pages and later finding that the comment has been erased or the video censored or that you have received a warning from the social media platform. How would you feel about that? You would be shocked, frustrated, in disbelief, or angry. Why would you feel any of these feelings? That would probably be because you feel that such action violates your freedom of speech. So, what does free speech on mean? Free speech refers to individuals’ right to express their ideas and opinions without government restriction. Social media is one of the platforms that allow people to express their beliefs, thoughts, and opinions. Individuals usually feel that they have the right to express themselves on social media and that they should not be reprimanded for self-expression. However, many social media companies usually take action against individuals whom they feel violate their standards through the content they share. So, where do we draw the line? Should free speech be regulated on social media? This paper argues that free speech on social media should be regulated because it fosters cyberbullying, hates speech, immorality, and violence.
