Week 3: Psychodynamic Theories

If you have ever heard of the terms defense mechanism, free association, or Freudian slip, you are already familiar with the work of Sigmund Freud. Freud is considered to be the “father” of modern psychology and is best known for his psychoanalytic theory, which marks the beginning of the psychodynamic perspective you read about in Week 1. His theory suggests that drives and motivations in the unconscious mind (outside of one’s awareness) influence the development of personality and maladaptive behavior. While his theory was radical at the time, it helped shape the course of clinical therapy for quite some time and remains a fixture in popular culture.

Another well-known psychodynamic theorist is Erik Erikson. Trained in psychoanalysis, Erikson proposed a theory of psychosocial development that identified stages of personality development in which particular conflicts or challenges must be addressed in order to successfully navigate later stages. For example, the sixth stage of his theory (intimacy vs. isolation) suggests that those who find love and companionship in early adulthood will have a healthier sense of self and will be better equipped to address the conflict that defines the next stage (generativity vs. stagnation). Those who are unable to achieve intimacy or who fear commitment and close relationships will likely feel isolated and lonely. This week, you will examine different psychodynamic theories and consider how research can help evolve these theories to better explain and predict behavior. You will also begin your journaling assignment by populating the Psychology Theories Template with information about psychodynamic theories. As you progress through the course, you will add other theories you learn about each week. The completed template is due on Day 7 of Week 11.
